NAME: Nikolaos Oikonomidis of Demetrios and Ioanna – great-grandson of Markos Oikonomidis (Unknown date of birth and death), grandson of Konstantinos M. Oikonomidis (1880-1964), son of Demetrios K. Oikonomidis (1927-2018), and brother of Markos D. Oikonomidis (1955)

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

He was born in Schinousa in the Cyclades in a musical family of many generations and got his first musical impulses from his grandfather and father. He studied classical violin at the National Conservatory of Athens. At the age of fifteen he began his professional collaboration with Dora Stratou. He participated in the recording of Greece’s national music, from Evros to Cyprus, on records and films. He has recorded the musical tradition of Kythera in the double album “Passage to Kythera”, in collaboration with the cultural association “Myrtia” of Kythera, and the traditional music of Amorgos, together with the cultural and art association “Simonidis”, in the album “Passage to Amorgos”. He completed the research and recording of the musical tradition of the North and East Aegean, presenting it in the album “East of the Aegean.” He has also released three personal albums with his own songs, “Lady of the Harbour”, “Antikeri” and “Dance in the Waves”, and two with Eleni Legaki, “Love and the Sea” and “When I hear the violin.” He has participated in international festivals and has been awarded third prize at the International Festival of Traditional Music “Sharg Taronalari” (Melodies of the East) held in Samarkand under the auspices of UNESCO. In 1990, he and other musicians formed the music group “Keros,” which has performed concerts in Greece and abroad. He has collaborated with important artists of Greece’s traditional music scene, as well as with art music composers and singers. He has taught traditional music at the University of Southern Maine. In 2001, he founded the music company “Keros Music” in order to systematically record and promote Greek traditional music.
