Markos Gavalas was born in Lagada, Amorgos. He was an amateur lute player. He played in Amorgos and later in Athens during the 1950s. He initially learned the art of cobbler in Hora Amorgos, but eventually left the island for Athens in order to serve his military service. In 1959 he was employed at DEI (as an oil operator) from where he also retired. He got married to Kalliope L. Dendrinou with whom they had two daughters – Anna and Sofia. His lute is kept in Athens by his family.
